Cricket's three formats and major tournaments

Cricket is a unique sport — the same bat-and-ball game is played in three completely different formats. Each format has its own pace, strategy and viewing experience, so betting markets work differently for each.

T20 Cricket

In this 20-over format, every ball matters. Batsmen take risks, bowlers are under pressure, and the result stays uncertain until the final moment. BPL and IPL are played in this format, which is the most popular among Bangladeshi fans.

BPL IPL T20 World Cup

ODI Cricket

In 50-over one-day matches, strategy becomes more complex. A team's tempo shifts mid-innings, and the Powerplay and death overs are calculated differently. ODI match betting markets are quite active in ICC World Cups and bilateral series.

ICC World Cup Bilateral Series

Test Cricket

In this five-day format, patience and strategy matter most. A draw is a valid result, so you can bet on three separate outcomes. Bangladeshi fans' interest in the Tigers' Test series continues to grow.

Test Series ICC Test Championship

Alongside cricket betting, my baji also offers betting on football and a few other sports. However, football does not have as wide a range of markets as cricket — in cricket you can bet on many things within a single innings, from the Toss to the highest score of the match, which is not possible in football. Football mainly has markets like Match Result, Goalscorer and First Goal Scorer. For details on betting across different sports, visit the my baji Bet sports betting section.

Popular betting markets and simple examples

In a cricket match you can bet on much more than just who will win. Below is a simple explanation of seven popular markets.

01

Match Winner

Picking which team will win the match is the simplest market. In T20 two results are possible; in Tests there are three including a draw. Example: Team A and Team B are playing — you pick Team B; if Team B wins, your bet is successful.

02

Toss Winner

This market is about which team wins the coin toss before the match starts. The outcome is completely 50-50, so odds are generally almost equal for both teams.

03

Top Batsman

Predict which batsman will score the most runs in an innings. This market requires you to pick the best performer within a team — the risk is higher, but the odds are more attractive.

04

Total Runs Over/Under

The bookmaker sets a specific run total. Choose whether the total runs in the match will be more than that number (Over) or less (Under). Pitch conditions and weather play a role in this market.

05

Fall of First Wicket

How many runs will be scored before the first opener is dismissed — this is a short market that is settled within the first few overs of the match. It is a good choice if you want a quick result.

06

Multi Bet (multiple selections)

Bet on multiple matches or markets at once — the odds of each selection are multiplied, so the potential return is larger. But if any one selection fails, the entire bet is lost — be aware of the risk.

07

Handicap Betting

A weaker team is given a virtual run advantage, or a stronger team is not given that advantage. This brings the odds of both teams closer together. Example: if Team A is given a 20-run handicap, 20 is added to Team A's total runs when deciding the result.

How to read and understand odds

Betting odds are written in three different ways. All three formats express the same probability — only the presentation differs. Below, all three formats are explained using the same bet as an example.

Odds Format Example (Team A wins) How to read it
Decimal
Most common
3.00 Total return = stake × odds. On a ৳200 bet the total return is ৳600.
Fractional
British format
2/1 ৳2 profit for every ৳1 staked. On a ৳200 bet the profit is ৳400, giving a total return of ৳600.
American
Easy to spot the underdog
+200 Plus means underdog. A ৳100 bet wins ৳200 profit — meaning a ৳200 bet returns ৳600 in total.

Worked Example 1 — three formats for the same outcome

Say the odds for Team A to win are: Decimal 3.00 = Fractional 2/1 = American +200. A ৳200 bet returns ৳600 in total if Team A wins (৳400 profit + ৳200 original stake); if Team A loses, ৳200 is lost.

Team A and Team B are fictional teams — this is an explanation of the numbers, not live odds.

Worked Example 2 — odds for the favourite

If Team B is the favourite the odds might be: Decimal 1.25 = Fractional 1/4 = American -400. American minus odds show how much you need to stake to win ৳100 — here it is ৳400. A ৳200 bet returns ৳250 in total (৳50 profit).

Lower odds mean lower risk, but also lower profit.

Live In-Play Betting

When a wicket falls, odds shift — the appeal of in-play betting

In live betting, odds keep changing while the match is in progress. After every over, wicket or boundary, the market recalculates.

🎯

Odds shift quickly when a wicket falls

When the batting team's best batsman is dismissed, their odds of winning the match shorten and the bowling team's odds lengthen. Betting at that moment lets you make decisions based on the situation.

📊

Over-by-over changes

If the batting team gets off to a strong start in the Powerplay, their odds shorten. If the run rate drops in the middle overs, the odds swing again — you can feel this movement in live odds.

⚡

In-play betting moves fast

Live markets are usually open for a short time. You need to decide before the next ball or over begins, so it is wise to understand the market well before placing a bet.

Live betting is also available on mobile through the my baji app. Both Android and iOS versions are available — download through the official channel.

Useful tips for getting started with betting

Cricket betting is a form of entertainment. Keeping the following tips in mind will make the experience better.

1

Understand a market well before betting on it

If you are new, start with the Match Winner or Toss market first. Get comfortable with simple markets before moving on to Handicap or more complex ones.

2

Set a budget and stick to it

Decide in advance how much you will bet on each match. It is better not to place a large bet immediately to recover what you have lost. Betting is for entertainment, not a source of income.

3

Keep your strategy different for T20 and Test

T20 changes quickly, so live betting can be effective. In Tests you can take your time over five days of ups and downs. Choose your market based on the format.

4

Be careful with multi bets

Multi bets may show a higher potential return but the risk is also higher. In a three-selection multi bet, if even one fails the entire bet is lost — so it is wise to start with fewer selections.

5

Follow responsible gaming rules

Betting should not become a daily routine. Setting limits and taking breaks are part of a healthy experience. Visit my baji's responsible gaming guidelines for more details.

Frequently Asked Questions — Cricket Betting

In T20 only two results are possible (win or loss), so the Match Winner market is straightforward. ODI also has mainly two results, but the Total Runs market is more popular given the longer innings. In Tests, a draw is a valid result — so the Match Winner market has three options. Tests also have innings-based markets that do not exist in T20.

In live betting, odds update automatically after every wicket, boundary or maiden over. For example — if the batting team loses two quick wickets, their odds of winning increase (they shift from favourite to underdog) while the bowling team's odds shorten. These changes happen very fast, so you need to stay focused when placing bets in live markets.

A multi bet pays out only if all selections are correct. If even one of three selections fails, the entire bet is lost — even if the other two are correct. Example: decimal odds of 1.40, 1.50 and 1.80 — multiplied together give combined odds of 3.78 (approximately); a ৳100 bet returns ৳378 if all win, but if one loses the full ৳100 is gone.

Settlement when a match is cancelled or incomplete depends on my baji's market terms. Generally a result is considered valid after a certain number of overs; if the match ends before that, the bet may be voided and the original amount refunded. Check the terms and conditions for exact rules.

In handicap betting, the weaker team is given a run advantage, or runs are deducted from the stronger team. Example: if Team A receives a 20-run handicap, 20 is added to their score when deciding the result. This brings the two teams' chances closer together and makes the odds more even. The actual margin at the end of the match determines who wins.
